Our senior population is the fastest growing population in the United States. By 2035, our senior population aged 65 and older is expected to be greater than the population of children. Needless to say, this projected number will include a sizeable number of veterans. Along with common age-related complex and high-risk chronic medical conditions, care of our senior veteran population requires an integrated, collaborative, and comprehensive model of care.
Programs designed to meet the complex care needs of veterans are being developed and implemented nationwide across the VA system. One approach used by the VA includes a "Geriatrics and Extended Care" program which funds personal home care aides trained to come to a veteran's home to help care of veterans and assist with daily activities so they can remain at home. Personal home care aides are not nurses, but they are supervised by a registered nurse who will help assess the veteran's daily living needs.
Veteran personal home care services can be used in combination with other home and community-based services and can vary by location. Personal home care services can be used as an alternative to nursing home care, and to get respite care at home for veterans and their family caregiver.
